The Young Achievers at Cambridge Secondary School-Recent Strategies that have been taken to Strengthen the Capacity of our students:
Student groups are on the increase. Day after day more are formed across the globe as young women around the world have realized that they need to work together so as to reach their full potential. Contrary to what was there before, women have risen, formed groups and most of them have one common goal: to improve their standards of living. At Cacos, the following three steps have been adopted to continuously challenge the students into planning for the future amidst changing times:
Training:
Continuous training is one of the primary methods of building the capacity of cacos student groups. Trainings have varied from one group to another depending on the groups’ preference and what the school management committee finds of great interest to the group. They could include issues such as saving management skills, leadership skills, among others. While capacity building aims to strengthen teachers’ ability to work together for mutual benefit and so training would has provided teachers with skills and tools they need to define student problems and formulate possible solutions. Training has also helped such needy student groups to learn how to organize themselves and work efficiently through the use of common resources.
Exchange visits both within Kyengera-Nsangi-Kampala-Uganda
At cacos, we recognize exchange visits for the student groups. This works to identify a group that is performing well and encourage other groups to learn from it. Alternatively they could network with others to identity other groups elsewhere where their own can learn. Exchange learning among students creates common understanding; strengthen relationships and networks and present learning experiences for the groups to share their skills and expertise. This strategy also enables groups to pay attention to topics of discussion, deeply learn and assess the relevance of new strategies to their everyday lives.
Discussion Forums
Our teachers have organized open forums for all the students. Forums create a space where ideas are explored informally. By bringing the student groups together, experiences as well as challenges they have encountered in their lives and or activities are shared. It is also in these forums that the School Management Committee can get views from the members of groups on how best it can come on board in assisting the groups realize their goals. Apart from the exchange of ideas, the students also gain confidence and boost their self-esteem when airing their views to a wider audience. They would therefore acquire the skill of public speaking from such gatherings.
The result of such efforts are students who have become self-reliant with support from the school by the help of the skills attained. The activities mentioned below are results of what has been achieved:
Making Paper Bags: (One of the school core activities)-was introduced and taught by one of the students to others in the school : A paper bag or paper sack is a preformed container made of paper, usually with an opening at one end. It can be one layer of paper or multiple layers of paper and other flexible materials. Paper bags are used for packaging and/or carrying items. One, Nagawa Sharifah a senior three class student makes paper bags to make ends meet both at home where she comes from and also top her fees . The money sold from the paper bags, is used to buy books, pens, mathematical sets-which are essential scholastic materials. Most of her clients are the people who make chapatis, cakes, chips and chicken. Sharifah commutes from home to school every day with her paper bags in one of the big polythene bags while the books are in the school bag. She leaves school at 4:00pm to sell the paper bags after her school work. Making paper bags is an activity she has done for the past three years and that is how she has been able to attain Education. Sharifah’s vision is to make it to the Univeristy and become one of Uganda’s great leader advocating for human rights –especially the girl child. She belives she will be able to make it because her paperbagmaking business is growing day by day and is indeed very grateful to the fonder of Cambridge Secondary School-Ms Kevin Kalule.
2. Bricklaying: The boys have also been trained on how to bake and lay bricks. These bricks are later sold to supplement income to the school. Such income is used to pay off teachers, buy school meals, pay electricity and water bills.
3. Bakery and Confectionary: With support of her children, a local bakery has been constructed out of clay and bricks. The students attend baking classes every Wednesday from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Cakes, cookies, bread and biscuits are some of the products of such efforts. Some of the above items are consumed at break tea while others are sold off to generate income to further support school activities.
4. School Farms :
The school is a beneficially of generous land grants from one of the children which the school uses to operate school farms; these farms help subsidize the nutritional needs of the school .Vegetables and fruits are obtained from the farms which are sold and fed to the children.
